A North Carolina family was recently awarded $7 million on behalf of their family member who died from a perforated bowel that she suffered after undergoing a hysterectomy.
According to court documents, a 54-year-old woman underwent a hysterectomy in September 2007. The woman complained of pain immediately following the surgery, however, she was released from the hospital, only later to return because of the pain. After three days at the hospital, doctors discovered that the woman had a perforated bowel from the surgery.
The woman suffered brain and kidney damage, sepsis, multiple organ failure, and pneumonia before she died on September 24. The jury determined that the doctor who performed the hysterectomy was guilty of negligence during and following the surgery.

Woman Left Unable to Blink After Eye Surgery

A woman was recently awarded $115,000 in a court case against a New Jersey plastic surgeon. The lawsuit was filed because the defendant was left unable to blink her eyes fully after she underwent eye surgery.
The woman sought the doctor’s help in correcting two previous eye surgeries that she had undergone in order to prevent her eyelids from drooping. Initially, the doctor gave the woman a cream to get rid of scars that were around her eyes because of the former surgeries. After using the cream, the woman claimed that she was happy with the results and decided not to have the surgery. However, the doctor allegedly then convinced her of the need for plastic surgery.
The doctor performed a blepharoplasty on the woman, and, following the procedure, the woman was unable to blink. Because of this, she is now at risk for glaucoma and could possibly become blind in the future.

Illinois Surgeon Sued for Patient’s Blindness After Surgery

A man is suing a surgeon and hospital in Illinois because he went blind after a routine spinal surgery. The man was not informed that, because he was obese and had diabetes, the surgery was not entirely safe.
The man laid face-down for about four hours and could not move at all during the course of the surgery. Immediately following the surgery, the man had extremely low blood pressure and was not able to move his upper limbs. He also was not able to see. While the man was eventually able to move his arms and hands again, he never regained his sight.
The surgeon who performed the surgery did not report these complications in the man’s medical files. The man is suing for $50,000 in damages and the case will be heard in July.
