Study shows that 1 in 6 prescriptions contain an error

Posted on Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 at 10:07 pm

A study conducted by the General Medical Council reveals that one in six medication prescriptions contains an error.

These errors are usually caused by mistakes surrounding misinterpreted or uninterpreted information by a general physician. Patients are often misinformed or not informed of how to properly take their medication, and that leads to complications.

The study also found that more errors with medication occurred for patients that were over the age of 75. This was usually the case due to the fact that these individuals were on more than one type of medication.

Pharmaceutical errors can be extremely costly to an individual. If you or someone you know has experienced a negative side effect due to a pharmaceutical error, please contact the pharmaceutical error lawyers of Levinson Axelrod, P.A. by calling 800-346-5529 today.

Millions of birth control packages recalled

Posted on Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 at 9:25 pm

Qualitest Pharmaceuticals, a company that manufactures generic pharmaceutical medication, has issued a recall on over 1.4 million birth control packages due to a packaging error. An error in the packaging made the expiration dates and pills’ lot number unreadable.

The company says there are no immediate health risks, despite an increased chance of unintended pregnancy due to a possible disruption of adequate dosage. It urges customers to use non-hormonal forms of birth control until the mistake is corrected.

Eight generic birth control products are affected by the recall: Gildess FE 1.5/30, Cyclafem 7/7/7, Emoquette, Tri-Previfem, Cyclafem 1/35, Gildess FE 1/20, Previfem, and Orsythia.

Government investigates Google’s online pharmaceutical ads

Posted on Wednesday, May 18th, 2011 at 3:23 pm

The popular Internet browser, Google, is currently under investigation by the government after it was found that many of the pharmaceutical companies advertising on Google were not legitimate.

The FDA confirmed the Internet-giant’s investigation, saying that rogue pharmaceutical companies covertly use the site to advertise illegal or counterfeit medicine. Although Google may not be aware of the illegitimate pharmaceutical companies’ advertisements, the company will still be held responsible for any that are found that do not meet FDA standards.

According to reports, Google has set aside at least $500 million to pay to the Justice Department if they are convicted of allowing illegal pharmaceutical companies to advertise their products.

Purchasing pharmaceuticals from an unreputable online source can have serious consequences on your health. If you have been given a pharmaceutical that causes complications in your health, please contact the New Jersey pharmaceutical error lawyers of Levinson Axelrod, P.A., at 800-346-5529.

Birth Control Manufacturers Sued Over Side Effects

Posted on Wednesday, February 9th, 2011 at 5:08 pm

The manufacturers behind the birth control pill Yasmin and Yaz are being sued by two New Jersey women who reported that they experienced blood clots and gallstones after taking the birth control pills.

This is not the first run-in the company has had with the FDA. The manufacturers, Bayer, were forced to remake commercials that falsely claimed the pill could treat serious premenstrual effects. Also, the pill has allegedly been the cause of over 50 deaths in a four year period.

The company has been issued a letter by the FDA warning them to remove any misleading adds, and they are currently facing trials for eight lawsuits.

If you or a loved one has suffered due to pharmaceutical drug side effects, please contact the New Jersey pharmaceutical error lawyers of Levinson Axelrod, P.A. by calling 800-346-5529.

Robot pharmacists reduce human error

Posted on Friday, June 4th, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Hospitals are trying to increase efficiency and reduce mistakes by improving technology at their medical centers.  New Jersey’s Holy Name Hospital is using robot pharmacists to package, store and dispense medication in an effort to reduce human error.  Robot pharmacists are doing what humans are doing–only better.  Augmenting human abilities and performing critical daily functions are nothing new for robots.  In fact, that’s what artificial intelligence is built to do and it’s how automation is gaining ground in medicine.

Other medical centers are keeping up with their own technological improvements. General Electric has developed software that can track patients’ histories and suggest treatment in real time. Intuitive Surgical’s DaVinci robot regularly performs prostate removals and hysterectomies, albeit under the guidance of human hands.  A California medical center ordered 100 iPads to keep its personnel current.

Since 2007, the robotic system used at Holy Name Hospital has revolutionized the way patients are treated, noting fewer mistakes because of its bar code technology.
