Pleas entered in nursing home abuse case
Posted on Wednesday, April 11th, 2012 at 2:23 pm
Two not guilty pleas were entered in a California courtroom yesterday morning in regards to charges of nursing home abuse and negligent care in the death of a patient.
A 77-year-old woman was brought to an El Dorado Care Center in California in order to recover from a pneumonia diagnosis. Instead of getting better, the woman progressively got worse, and ultimately passed away at the nursing home. Her condition deteriorated in just 13 days, and her husband began questioning the service of care that she received.
During her stay at the nursing home, some of the woman’s pre-existing problems were not cared for, and she also developed bruising on several areas of her body. No one at the home recorded these changes, which is required by law if abuse is suspected. Two nurses at the center were charged with negligence and abuse of the woman. They have both declared their innocence.

A 45 year-old man has plead no contest in court this week to charges of abusing a patient at the nursing home he worked for.
In 2010, an elderly man was taken to the hospital with suspicious injuries. The hospital then filed a complaint with the police department after the patient said he had been abused by a nurse. An internal investigation conducted by the nursing home and also a police investigation led to formal charges of abuse.
The nurse has been sentenced to two years probation and two years suspended sentence. He has been ordered to take anger management classes and must complete a hundred hours of community service.

After growing concerns about the woman’s care, her family placed hidden cameras in her room at the facility. The woman’s relatives then turned to the police. Three nurses have now been charged with simple assault, neglect, harassment, recklessly endangering another person, and conspiracy. All claim their innocence and are currently out on bail.

Nursing home under investigation after neighbor witnessed abuse
Posted on Thursday, June 2nd, 2011 at 3:14 pm
Edwards Group Home, a home for mentally ill patients in Hookerton, North Carolina, has recently been under a state investigation after a neighbor of the nursing home witnessed and videotaped a patient being abused by an employee at the home.
Last week, the neighbor and her husband heard screaming coming from the home. When they looked outside, they saw an employee head-butting and punching a patient. They were able to film the incident using a cell phone and turned the evidence into the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, which began an investigation into the home.
This is not the first investigation into the home. In April, officials investigated the home after neighbors witnessed a patient starting a fire in the front yard. The home was cited with a $500 fine for neglect.
