Private New Jersey surgery centers found to be unsanitary
Posted on Monday, May 23rd, 2011 at 3:49 pm
During federal safety inspections performed in private surgical centers in New Jersey, it was found that over half of the centers upheld unsanitary practices in their facilities. This recent finding has many federal safety officials concerned for the health of New Jersey residents.
At least 55 centers were cited during the inspections. Of the citations that were issued to the surgical centers, many were for not sterilizing used equipment. Physicians at the centers were also found to have expired medication with them. Unsafe surgical centers have been a problem for New Jersey in the past, as two centers were shut down in 2009 following safety inspections.
The unsafe practices of not sterilizing equipment and prescribing expired medication can both pose serious risks for patients, such as infection and death after surgery. Officials have stated their concern for people who have surgeries performed at private surgical centers because they may not know that the center is unsafe. Federal inspectors in New Jersey are working to correct this problem.

Man Dies After Hospital Fails to React Quickly
Posted on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011 at 4:30 pm
A man died recently from unspecified medical problems after he was not admitted into a hospital quickly enough.
The man was found by a woman in the parking garage of a Portland, Oregon hospital. The woman got the attention of a police officer, who then rushed to the emergency room to report the man’s condition and ask for help. The officer said that he was told by an ER worker that he needed to call an ambulance, despite already being at the hospital. A paramedic and security guard came to the garage and brought the man into the hospital, but he died only twenty-four minutes after being admitted into the ER.
The hospital maintains that it did nothing wrong, and no claims have been filed thus far.
