A 63-year-old man from Staten Island was recently awarded $5.4 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit against Staten Island University Hospital.
According to the lawsuit, the man suffered severe bed sores after being admitted to the hospital for brain dysfunction. The man, who is a Vietnam veteran, contracted bed sores on his buttocks, genitals, mouth, and ankles. The man also had bed sores near his lower spine. Doctors applied topical creams to the sores, but the man soon contracted a hip infection from a sore that exploded. He was left unable to walk and currently uses a wheelchair.
A jury awarded the man damages for medical expenses and mental and physical anguish. Reports have indicated that Staten Island University Hospital will appeal the decision.
