Mother and daughter die in car crash

Posted on Monday, October 3rd, 2011 at 7:21 pm

A 24 year-old South Brunswick mother and her eight year-old daughter were killed late last week in a two-car collision. The woman lost control of her vehicle when she tried to go around the car in front of her on Route 27. She veered to the right lane and blew the rear tire out as she hit a curb, causing her to drive head-on into a minivan taxi.

The mother, her daughter, and son were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital with serious injuries. The eight year-old daughter and her mother died the next day; the seven year-old boy’s condition has not been released. The driver of the taxi and its passenger were treated at the scene with minor injuries.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victims in this tragic accident.

30,000+ Jettas recalled

Posted on Friday, September 23rd, 2011 at 8:25 pm

More than 30,000 2011-2012 Jetta sedans are being recalled after Volkswagen of America Inc. received several complaints of people inadvertently burning their legs on protruding exhaust pipes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Volkswagen conducted an investigation into the complaints and discovered that stainless steel exhaust pipe tips were installed on the models after they were imported. The tips cause the exhaust pipes to protrude out farther than original factory-installed ones.

Burning can occur when the vehicle has been running for sometime, causing the pipe to become hot. The recall will begin in November. Volkswagen will inspect and replace the exhaust pipes as necessary, free of charge.

NJ cities most car accident prone

Posted on Thursday, September 8th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Two New Jersey cities made Allstate’s list for the most accident-prone cities in the country. This week Allstate published its “Best Drivers in America” list of the 200 most populated cities, and New Jersey takes two spots in the bottom ten. Jersey City has been ranked as the eighth most accident-prone city and Newark is fourth.

Some experts aren’t surprised to see New Jersey cities round out the bottom ten since it was listed as a state with one of the worst roads in America. Residents in Jersey City have a 57.5% increased risk of an accident, and Newark residents have a 70.8% increased risk. Fortunately, New Jersey has some of the lowest per capita car fatality rates. Allstate found that Washington, D.C. is the most accident-prone city in the country.

Two officers injured in car chase

Posted on Monday, August 22nd, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Two Fairfield officers were hurt in a car crash while pursuing a speeding vehicle in the early morning hours on Sunday. They were sent to the hospital; one was released with leg injuries and the other officer is still in medical care but with non-life threatening injuries.

Both were in pursuit of a suspected drunk driver who later crashed into a closed highway exit ramp on Route 46. The 27 year-old man was arrested and charged with eluding arrest, speeding, drunk driving, and for outstanding warrants.

One officer involved in the car accident had recently returned to active duty after he was shot multiple times in a road rage accident. In January 2010, he was shot multiple times in the chest, head, and leg by a 24 year-old man. The suspect was later arrested.
