Mother of paralyzed man files medical malpractice lawsuit
Posted on Friday, November 2nd, 2012 at 5:55 pm
The mother of a man who suffered extensive brain damage following a bar attack has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against two hospitals alleging that they did not treat his injuries properly, leading to the man’s disabilities.
Three years ago, the then-26-year-old man was standing outside of a bar in Mokena, Illinois, when another man, who was celebrating his 21st birthday at the same bar, approached him and delivered two serious blows to his head.
As a result of the attack, the man sustained traumatic brain injuries. He was taken by paramedics to a nearby hospital where he was supposed to be treated for his injuries. He was treated at two separate hospitals, but due to a lack of communication between paramedics and doctors on-site, he was not treated quickly enough to avoid devastating brain damage.
The man now lives with his mother and is legally blind and permanently paralyzed as a result of the attack. His mother has filed a malpractice lawsuit on his behalf in order to obtain financial compensation for his debilitating injuries. She is asking for $200,000 in damages to pay for his ongoing medical costs.

A serious act of hospital negligence recently left a transplant patient without a kidney at an Ohio hospital.
The kidney transplant recipient was waiting to have one of her brother’s kidneys transplanted into her body when a nurse mistakenly tossed the kidney into a trashcan inside the hospital. When staff realized what had happened, it was too late to save the kidney.
The nurse responsible for the negligent act was put on administrative leave while a proper investigation into the incident was conducted. The hospital also announced that its transplant program would be suspended for the time being as well.

Birth injury lawsuit ends in $21 million verdict

A jury in Baltimore, Maryland, recently awarded a $21 million verdict to a couple with a son who has cerebral palsy as a result of a medical error.
The boy’s mother entered the hospital in 2002 after going into labor prematurely. She delivered her son vaginally despite warning signs that the baby was not receiving enough oxygen. The couple stated that the hospital staff should have recognized this lack of oxygen and should have immediately performed a Caesarean section in order to prevent the birth injury.
The couple filed a lawsuit against the hospital and its staff, citing medical malpractice. They were awarded $18 million for medical expenses, $2 million for the potential loss of income, and $1 million for damages involving emotional trauma. The couple’s now-9-year-old son lives his life in a wheelchair and has extreme difficulty controlling his limbs. His parents said he will remain in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

Donated kidney goes to wrong patient in Dallas hospital
Posted on Friday, July 6th, 2012 at 2:01 pm
A patient in a Dallas hospital is recovering after receiving a kidney that should have gone to someone else.
A hospital staff member made a mistake in the matching process at the hospital, therefore resulting in the wrong patient on the list receiving the donated kidney. The surgery took place without the mistake being corrected, and it wasn’t until after the surgery was completed that the error was detected.
The patient who received the kidney has had no complications with the organ at this time. The hospital staff member responsible for the mix-up has been fired, and the kidney transplant program that is in place at the hospital has been suspended.
