On Tuesday, a California woman was awarded $198,000 in her medical malpractice lawsuit against the hospital that wrongly diagnosed her with breast cancer and led her to have an unnecessary double mastectomy.
In 2007, Ana Jiminez-Salgado had a biopsy at Los Angeles County- USC Medical Center and two outside pathologists told doctors at the center that the biopsy showed the cells were cancerous. She later had her breasts surgically removed at USC Medical Center. Then, after going back for reconstructive surgery the hospital’s pathologists told her that the cells were not cancerous. According to county documents, Jiminez-Salgado was suffering from “a benign condition with features that are very similar to cancerous cells”.
Jiminez-Salgado filed suit against the hospital for negligence in relying on outside pathologists and for negligence in her reconstructive procedure.
