The Problems with Delays in Treatment
Understandably, delays in treatment do occasionally arise. Sometimes, the necessary materials are not available – for example, it can often be difficult to immediately find large supplies of uncommon blood types. Other times, however, treatment is administered late for inexcusable reasons. When a doctor fails to diagnose an obvious condition, or when priority treatment isn’t given to the patients who need immediate care, then an unreasonable delay in treatment may have occurred.
Delays in the ER
Emergency rooms are common locations for treatment delays. They are often filled with patients suffering from acute, painful, and dangerous conditions. Some situations are worse than others and therefore need to be prioritized first. Others, though painful, are not life-threatening and treatment for them may be postponed while more serious conditions take precedence.
When protocol is not established or followed, or when ER workers are undertrained or fail to administer treatment promptly, then patients may suffer an unreasonable delay in treatment.
Delays in Treating Aggressive Illnesses
Certain, aggressive illnesses can be extremely dangerous if they are not cared for immediately. The following conditions, if diagnosed or treated late, may be fatal:
- Cancer
- Heart Attacks
- Strokes
- Aneurysms
- Meningitis
- Appendicitis
- Gunshot wounds
Again, belated treatment may make the difference between life and death in these situations. If the above conditions are allowed to progress, their effects may be irreversible. Therefore, it is critical for physicians to be able to recognize these situations, identify them as immediate concerns, and treat them right away.
